Sometimes in the backcountry, you have to take the ski's off, and boot pack it to the summit. Having a wider footprint makes this a lot easier. We've made the Ascent plate small enough to fit into most 20ltr packs, with almost no volume footrpint, so you can just have them there all the time as a backup without thinking about it. The outer shape is curved to minimise damage when kicking into rock and ice, while the carbon fibre offers maximum rigidity and strength for its weight.

The Ascent Plate works with most boot crampon systems (but it is possible that you might need to make some minor adjustments with a dremel to the internal recess shape if your crampons don't fit automatically). Simply thread the front of the crampon through the recess, then the rear of the crampon through, place your boot on top nicely centred, and close the crampons over the boot, sandwiching the plate tightly into place.  

To use the plate without crampons, thread your elasticated strap through the plate, hook the rear of your boot into the rope (this needs to be lengthened or shortened to centre your boot), and close the strap over the top of your boot. The plate comes with grub screws that you can thread into the plate from the top down, which act like mini crampons to bite into icy snow for a little extra hold  if you don't have crampons (optional to install these).
